Step 1: EXTRACT FRAMES

  • Source video is in bad shape, multiple frames are damaged because of bad storage condition and time.
  • This example shows a frame from movie Edgenössisches Turnfest Luzern 1928. Link
  • It has been recorded with a 35 mm, Nitratfilm. The resultion is 768x576 pixel.

Step 2: NOISE REDUCTION

  • Using state of the art visual transformer based AI to remove defects from the frames.
  • Combines spatial and temporal information from adjacent frames to restore the frame more rigorous.
  • Implementation is inspired by the paper Bringing Old Films Back to Life

Step 3: COLORIZATION

  • We colorize the frames to make historical footage more engaging and relatable.
  • The AI only requires one reference image to be colorized, then automatically applies consistent colors across all frames.
  • Currently, the colorization process works best on continuous scenes without cuts.
  • This implementation is inspired by the paper Colormnet

Step 4: UPSCALING

  • As a final enhancement, we upscale the video resolution by a factor of 4.
  • This step requires careful consideration, as AI upscaling can introduce artificial details not present in the original footage.
